Elta MD sunscreens were a clear favorite when we asked our group members which sunscreen they used. After trying the Sheer-Face option listed below, I can say, the hype is well-deserved! It made my face look fantastic, way better than the other 2 options (Truskin and House of Joseon) I’ve tried. Truskin was decent, and had no noticeable white cast despite its only active ingredient being zinc oxide. Yet, it lacked the oomph that Elta MD Sheer Face delivered, but is a good choice if you want a purely physical sunscreen. House of Joseon, a Korean sunscreen made me break out and even before the breakout, I did not like how it sat on my skin, so I cannot recommend it, even though it is actually a pretty popular sunscreen choice.
Coming back to EltaMD, despite being a combination physical and chemical sunscreen (it contains zinc oxide plus one other chemical sunscreen ingredient, options vary based on the formulation) there is ZERO white cast. I’m not sure how they do it, but it actually makes me look better and feel enthusiastic about applying sunscreen! Unlike other purely chemical sunscreens, it has way fewer chemical ingredients and does not go over safety levels set by the EU that I am aware of. In comparison, other popular chemical sunscreen options (Supergoop, Shesheido) have homosalate levels well above the safety cutoff set by the EU.
